At least 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
